HOW CAN A COURTAGEN TEST HELP MY CHILD?Getting your child’s illness diagnosed might feel like a never-ending quest—especially if he or she is suffering from a complicated neurological or metabolic disorder. Courtagen’s comprehensive approach to genetic testing could help shed light on new information that may lead to a more accurate diagnosis, and potential treatment options for your doctor to explore.
An Important Connection
Richard Boles and his team at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, along with colleagues around the world, conducted research that suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction is an important part of the genetic component of many of the functional and dysautonomic (disease or malfunction of the autonomic nervous system that controls many functions in the body) conditions, including: Autism spectrum disorder, Chronic fatigue, Depression, Cyclic vomiting, Irritable bowel syndrome, migraines and other chronic pain syndromes.
Finding Potential Treatment Options Through Testing
Ordering a comprehensive sequencing analysis test allows doctors to examine the genetic variants that may be contributing to disease and suggest potential treatments options.
WHAT TESTS ARE AVAILABLE?
Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Common neurodevelopmental disorders include developmental delay (DD), intellectual disability (ID), and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). These disorders are complex and have a wide range of symptoms and severity. Multiple lines of evidence support the strong role of genetics in these disorders.
Courtagen offers the following test for neurodevelopmental disorders:Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders: Epilepsy is not a single disorder, but a collection of many disorders producing seizures affecting a variety of mental and physical functions. It’s also called a seizure disorder. When a person has two or more unprovoked seizures, they are considered to have epilepsy. A seizure happens when a brief, strong surge of electrical activity affects part or all of the brain. Seizures can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. They can have many symptoms, from convulsions and loss of consciousness to some that are not always recognized as seizures by the person experiencing them or by health care professionals.
Courtagen offers the following test for epilepsy and seizures:Mitochondrial Disorders: Mitochondrial disorders result from failures of the mitochondria, our cells’ power plants. When the mitochondria do not work properly, an energy crisis occurs—resulting in disease and disorder throughout the body.
Since all organ systems are energy-dependent, any one is at risk for becoming dysfunctional in the setting of reduced energy. Depending on which cells are affected, symptoms may include loss of motor control, muscle weakness and pain, gastro-intestinal disorders and swallowing difficulties, poor growth, cardiac disease, liver disease, diabetes, respiratory complications, seizures, visual or hearing problems, lactic acidosis, developmental delays, and susceptibility to infection.
Courtagen offers the following tests for mitochondrial disorders:
HOW IS COURTAGEN DIFFERENT? We use cutting-edge technology, combining Next Generation DNA Sequencing with custom-designed laboratory and analysis methods. Our industry-leading geneticists and clinical experts turn sequencing information into useable test results that help diagnose your child and guide your doctor’s choice of potential treatment options.
Our tests must be ordered directly from Courtagen by a licensed physician. Once your doctor completes
HOW DO I ORDER A COURTAGEN TEST?
our test requisition form, we will send a sample collection kit directly to you.
HOW DO I SUBMIT A SAMPLE? Courtagen’s tests use DNA from saliva samples. Everything you’ll need to collect a saliva sample from your child is provided in the kit—including packaging and return postage to mail it to our laboratory. If preferred by you or your doctor, we also accept blood or tissue samples for testing. Learn more and watch our video.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET RESULTS? Unlike other testing companies, our results come back in weeks versus months, getting you closer to answers faster.
WILL MY INSURANCE COVER THE COST? Members of the patient advocacy group at Courtagen work with you and your insurance provider. We will coordinate the pre-authorization process and are available to assist with an appeal process if needed. Courtagen does not participate in Tricare, Medicare or Medicaid at this time.
